Halo Guide/Banshee

Crew: 1 pilot
Armament: 2x Light Plasma Cannons
Secondary: 2x Fuel Rod Cannons
The Banshee is the Covenant's standard ground assault aircraft. It is very fast, extremely maneuverable and capable of hovering. It has two weapon pods mounted to either side of the fuselage. Both of these pods contain a light plasma cannon and a Fuel Rod cannon. Though small arms fire may disrupt of disable the pilot, only heavy weapons are capable of inflicting damage or destroying the vehicle.

Notes: The Banshee is a good craft; fast enough, excellent turning, well armed, and it makes cool whhhhooosh sounds and leaves vapour trails when you turn at full speed. It's plasma cannons are essentially airborne Plasma Rifles that don't overheat (useful on Elites and such), and its Fuel Rod gun makes it a competent anti-vehicle attacker. However, it has low armor, and is particularly vulnerable to rockets and close-range Shotgun blasts. Its air speed is approximately equal to the Ghost's, without being slowed by intervening terrain. The Master Chief can fly the Banshee in Assault on the Control Room, Two Betrayals, and a super-fast invincible version in Keyes.

With:
Banshees are a joy to pilot, with their speed allowing you to traverse great distances relatively quickly, and with serious firepower behind this speed. If you want to hover and fire weapons, pull back on the left stick. Try not to get too close to the ground, as you are easier to hit, and your Fuel Rods loose their height advantage. Remember, Fuel Rods have an arc, so learn to compensate for this.

It takes a few Fuel Rods to take down an Elite or Ghost, so if attacking, fire plasma at your enemy while your secondary fire recharges. Fuel Rods deal impressive splash damage - nailing one enemy will send it's nearby allies flying. Particularly useful against groups of Grunts (just make sure your allies aren't caught up in the blast). Keep an eye out for packs of enemies armed with Needlers, which seem to do a lot of damage to Banshees at closer ranges (probably due to it's homing and spamming -ness). Plasma Rifles, Shotguns, and of course RLs, do a lot of damage as well, so watch out for Elites and Flood Warriors. The Banshee is like an airborne Ghost - fast, deadly, but not indestructible, so keep an eye on the armor meter.

The Banshee is good against Ghosts, which simply won't attack you unless you drop right down, and Shades, which a single Fuel Rod will send reeling. When attacking Ghosts, get to a decent height and aim at the rear of the craft (unless you are confident of scoring a direct hit, which will likely damage the vehicle more than the pilot). Two or three good hits should either kill the pilot or render the enemy craft unfit for combat. When dealing with Shades, a direct Fuel Rod hit will flip the turret and kill the operator, though a blast in close proximity should do just as well.

In the Banshee, you should watch out for several things: Hunters, Wraiths, and other Banshees. Hunters and Banshees will Fuel Rod you, and the plasma blast from the Wraith deals serious damage to your armor. So, whenever attacking these enemies, get them from behind (where they can't hit you). It takes a few Fuel Rods to take down a Hunter, and even more for a Wraith. Other Banshees are easy if you manage to stick to their tail. Just watch out if you are being engaged by more than one - just because you're attacking one doesn't mean the other can't get behind you and blast a Fuel Rod into your tail. Try to stay out of Plasma Rifle range - Elites are good against Banshees (and require a couple of fuel rods to kill).

Remember, as a last resort you can always crash into your opponents. While I wouldn't really recommend this (those tricky Elites are quite good at dodging), this tactic can be useful against Hunters.

Against:
Banshees don't like Shotguns or RLs, so if a Banshee comes into an attack run, shoot it in the front with a rocket, blast it with the Plasma Rifle until it drops, or wait until it's almost above you and rip into its belly with the Shotgun (two direct shots and a couple more mid-range shots should to the trick). If you miss it, try to take it down if it's dumb enough to crash into the wall behind you. You could also tag the craft with a Plasma Grenade, though you will have to survive the attack run (a single additional hit with a Pistol will take it down). Of course, it's possible to kill a Banshee with other weapons, but better not to do it with ARs, Needlers or Plasma Pistols, which either don't dish out much damage, are to hard to dish it with, or don't dish it out fast enough.

A good vehicle against Banshees is the Warthog, as the LAAG is exceptionally powerful, and rips through their armor in seconds. AI Banshees sometimes use their Fuel Rods, and the falling wreckage of a destroyed aircraft is capable of flipping a Warthog if it collides with the car, so try to keep your crew in their seats by dodging these threats. Of course, Scorpions are good against Banshees as well, with a direct hit bringing the airborne threat down in flames. Just try and get it before it opens fire, or you (and your passengers) could be facing more than a few flesh wounds.

If facing a Banshee in a Ghost, I would suggest bailing, but if you have to, use that speed to dodge enemy shots. Your plasma weapons have a low tilt, and thus can only attack the Banshee in the earlier part of its run. If attacking Banshees from Shades, your primary concern is watching out for Fuel Rods headed your way. When shooting, you have to lead your shots quite a bit, though they do enough damage to make it more or less worth it.
