Guide/Elite Armament: Plasma Rifles, Needlers, Plasma Swords, Plasma Grenades Armor: med + full regenerative energy shield There are a few varieties of the Elite, but all are roughly 8'6" tall and incredibly strong. Their strength allows them to rely on brute force when necessary, but they're quite capable of brilliant battlefield tactics as well. Their natural resilience is augmented with full-body energy shielding which recharges when depleted. They wield plasma pistols, plasma rifles, grenades and needlers. Notes: Elites are some of the tougher enemies you will face. They are skilled with their weapons, have rechargeable shields, and use cover and such in combat. They are agile and are quite proficient at dodging grenades in some of the higher difficulties. They pilot most of the Covenant's vehicles, so try and take them out if they're near Ghosts, Banshees and Wraiths. There are a couple of different types of Elites, notably the Yellow Elite, with its powerful shield and long jumps, and the Special Ops Elite, which is an excellent grenade thrower. The Elites were enlisted by the Prophets to assert their will over the lesser races, and to keep them in line. They are powerful and intelligent, controlling many of the Covenant's vehicles and capable of using most of the Covenant's weaponry. The Elites look down on the lesser races, and interestingly, view projectile weapons, including the Needler, as crude and primitive. They obey the Prophets unquestioningly, believing them to be holy in accordance to their religion. -Against Special Ops Elites, try and be cunning, as they are quite adept at tagging you in the face with grenades, and are able to hit you from afar. -Try not to get in melee wars with Elites unless their shields are low - they're quite good at whacking things. -Grunts tend to inform nearby Elites of your presence. -Cloaked Elites are sometimes armed with Plasma Swords, a dead giveaway to their presence. Cloaked Elites always appear in conjunction with a certain music track, so if you hear 'the music', tool up with an appropriate weapon. Note that Cloaked Elites can also appear in areas where 'the music' doesn't play (confusing, I know). -Elites are right handed. Useful to remember when taking aim against a cloaked Elite. -Yellow Elites are capable of jumping extremely high and far, and also have powerful shields. They are dangerous if armed with Plasma Swords. Sword-wielding Yellow Elites do not dodge grenades when charging at you, and are vulnerable to Plasma Grenades when jumping. -Elites are fast runners and use cover quite proficiently, especially when recharging their shields. -Killing an Elite will cause any nearby Grunts to retreat. Pistol: Pistols are terrible when it comes to taking down their shields, so try and use another weapon (eg Plasma Pistol) and some 'nades to drop them. Once the Elite's shield is down, aim for the noggin with the Pistol. One or two shots will take him down. If however you *must* take an Elite down with only a Pistol, use a combination of auto fire and melee attacks. Be persistent; it takes more than a clip to down his shield. Assault Rifle: Another weapon useless against their shields. Try and mix up the place with grenades, but if you have none, either use another weapon such as a Plasma Pistol or take your chances with whacking and firing. That being said, the AR is quite good once you take down his shields. Spraying a clip in the general direction of a cloaked Elite will temporarily decloak him. Shotgun: A mighty weapon, the Shotgun is great for getting into the thick of it against a bunch of Elites. One or two close-ranged shots will take down his shield, allowing you to finish him off at your leisure. Try to be cunning when getting up close, as you are vulnerable until you get within effective firing range. The Shotgun has a mediocre melee, so don't rely on it too much. Sniper Rifle: In Legendary, your average Elite will need two shots to the head to take him down, though one to the head and one to the sternum or between the scapulas works fine. Try and fire both shots quickly so the Elite doesn't have a chance to dive for cover. In lower difficulty levels, it only takes a single shot to the had to kill. Stay at extreme range with this weapon, as you will lose your advantage once the enemy gets up close. Rocket Launcher: A direct hit will kill, with a splash hit taking down his shields. As always, attack from a high angle. If necessary, fire off your rocket, then charge in with an AR or Plasma Rifle. If you can't hit the Elite directly, aim at a nearby rock or energy shield. Frag Grenade: Not as effective as you might hope. Elites are highly proficient at dodging grenades, making the Frag Grenade's usefulness somewhat questionable. However, they are effective against Elites recharging their shields behind cover. Plasma Rifle: A highly effective weapon against Elites. Point it at the Elite, and hold down the trigger. The Elite should be dead by the time it overheats (of course, it is better not to overheat it). It has an excellent melee, so take down his shield, then charge and bash him to death. Plasma Pistol: An overcharged shot will fully down an Elite's shield, particularly useful against Yellow Elites. Follow up with Pistol headshots, or fire with another weapon to take him down. Normal fire isn't that bad, though you will likely overheat your weapon faster than you will take him down. The Plasma Pistol has an excellent whack, so if you're in the mood to try to bash an Elite to death, this is the weapon for you. Needler: Lo and behold, a viable use for the Needler! Emptying half a clip in the general direction of an Elite will take him down and injure any supporting troops nearby. The Needler is also capable of stopping a Gold Elite's charge, provided you expend a large amount of ammo. However, it is all but useless against cloaked Elites, so be careful when entering unknown areas, or when 'the music' plays. Plasma Grenade: While tagging Elites can be difficult, it is easier to do if the target doesn't see you. Edge out from behind corners or cover and tag any appendages (arms, legs, etc) you can see. In this way, you can still tag the Elite without damaging yourself or alerting him to your presence. You can also tag an Elite while he is stunned, just after you down his shields. Warthog: The LAAG is quite effective, though it takes time to take down the shield. Running Elites down is far faster, though this can be tricky. Just keep moving to dodge the plasma. Passengers with Sniper Rifles are extremely effective against Elites, so try and convince them to ride shotgun with you whenever possible. Scorpion: Don't try and run Elites down, as they are simply too fast. Also, you should only use the AR turret to take him down if he has no shield, or if you're trying to delay his recharge. Stick to the cannon, I say. Send 'em flying. :) Ghost: Use your speed to circle-strafe, charge, and do all sorts of tricky maneuvers to avoid their plasma fire. Keep moving. When you get close enough, simply point and pull the trigger. A couple of seconds of solid fire will take an Elite down. Banshee: Lay into the Fuel Rods. Heat up the area with plasma between rounds to prevent their shields from recharging. If you feel confident of your success, drop down and crush the Elite. Just be careful, as they can dodge and fire, seriously damaging the craft. Use that discretion thing. :) |
